MRS. PHILIP SNOWDEN
Mrs. Philip Snowden, wife of the Socialist member for Blackburn, wlio has recently returned from America, is well known all over fhe kingdom as a public speaker, says 'M.A.P ' and is possessed, to an unusual degree, of that personal magnetism that immediately enlists sympathy for the cause she is . advocating. Perhaps it is because she gives so.vivid an impression of absolute sincerity. In\'her presence one finds running. ®™ugh, one's subconscious mind the words % sli.vJow of turning," and one notes the ; testimony, offered by tho directness of her' . large; and exceedingly, luminous eyes. Mrs.' Snowden's. short twenty-seven years' of life have brought her face to face with more of the'real-things of life than many of her sex even.blink at in octogenarian existences. Mrs: Snowden was born at Harrogate, and on leaving school-was sent to the Liverpool .Training: College with a view, to becoming a -teacher. During her time of studentship she identified herself ivith much of the best work' for the. poorest' inhabitants of the city, and she contributed some brilliant articles Vo tho Liverpool Daily Post.'.' After a short term of employment as. teacher in a. school at Leeds, Mrs. Snowden devoted all her energ'es to the cause of Temperance, and it was during a vigorous campaign against the heavy drinking at that time indulged in by members of Labour and-Socialist Clubs., that she met Mr. Philip -Snowden,' already a, notable lecturer und writer. Since their marriiice in 1905, Mrs.' Snowden 'has spoken in a,most overy industrial centre of the United Kingdom, sometimes as her husband's, substitute, when the frail health which is a severe handicap to his desire' for unremitting work made a public appearance impossible. Her home is at Kensington, but she and her husband have but rare opportunities to enjoy its quiet seclusion. •'
