A Canton telegram, published in tlm "New York Herald," states that it is belived tliat Germany intends to annex inn island in tho Pacific, and to transfer thither Ilol' naval base. The supposition is strengthened by the fact that tho Commandant of tho German squadron at Canton has shipped aboard a German steamer a quantity of food, supplied, gilns, ammunition, and material for tho erection of barracks. Tho destination of this shipment is unknown. Tho' British cruiser Flora lias been ordered to watch tho vessel. A POSSIBLE EXPLANATION. SAMOAN DISCONTENT. (Rec, Mnrcli 15, 0.55, n. 111.) London, March 14. A Rcuter's telegram from Berlin states that in response to a request by tho German Governor of Samoa, three warships on tho China Station, under tho command of RearAdmiral Curper (aboard tho cruiser Leipzig), aro now duo at Apia. Tho guuboats Jaguar and Arkona aro following. It is added that in connection with tho succession of tho Samoan chief Mataafa, some opposition to German supremacy has been organised by the ehicf Lanaki, who refuses to obey tho Governor. It is hoped that tho presence of warships will sufflco to sccuro tho censuro and punishment of tho ringleaders and tho prevention of bloodshed. [Germany is constructing a fortified coaling station at Kaioehau, a port of Shantung, China, held on 99 years' lease from China. Possibly the New Y)fk story is based ou tho theory that Germany will transfer .from Kaioehau to the hypothetical island referred to. Under rho Samoan partition, Germany acquired Upolu, Savaii, and other islands.]
