BROOKLYN TRAMS.
REPLY TO ELECTORS' ASSOCIATION.- ." The city; electrical engineer (Mi , . Stuart Richardson) ■ has forwarded a reply to the Brooklyn Electors' Association regarding various matters brought under his notice - concerning the Brooklyn tramway service. As to accommodation, the engineer advised that the single truck palace and Hong-Kong cars should be-ased where practicable in place of the smaller box cars. The present service "of. cars from Manners Street to Brooklyn from 5 o'clock, the report proceeds', ■ consists of two cars at 5.2,. three at 5.12, and three at 5.22, which is about the maximum the department can run with the present, time-table. Notwithstanding this service, the rush after 5, and sometimes at other hours at the Manners Street end of the line is always unseemly,, and calculated to provoko a breach of the peace, while it is sometimes dangerous, passengers being so eager to get a seat as to be unmindful of. the heavy traffic passing this narrow spot at certain hours of the day. ~ The ten-minute service admittedly caused an accumulation of passengers, but that was being, looked into with a view of alteration. Instructions had been issued . and frequently repeated to conductors to make inquiries at Manners Street for Jhe purpose of finding out those passengers who do not wish to ascend the mil.' " ' ■ ' The matter of running 60-passenger cars instead of tho smaller ones on the Brooklyn line is being considered 'by the council; but the 60passenger cars at present in use in the service are too heavily built for running up Brooklyn JIM without alteration. Information is. being obtained on this point from the makers of the car equipment. With regard to the use of open or Hong-Kong cars' in wef weather,' these have been used on account of their greater carrying capacity. - It. is a case of using them, or the smaller box cars. . ' ■
_In response- to .v'query as.to whether the JJrooklyn cars could be allowed to run on to the Government Station, Mr. Richardson re-, plied, that there, were already more cars lhannecessary running through Lambton Quay, and to agree to the proposal would simply add unprofitable, mileage. In fact, ho stated, the running through to the Government Station before 9 a.m. -is now carried .ont at a loss.-
