TRADES COUNCIL.
THE HOUSING PROBLEM. The weekly meeting of the Trades and Labour Council whs held last evening, Mr. W. C. Noot presiding. ■- '" The secretary of the Plasterers' Union ndvised that he had been instructed to •withdraw the accusation against Mr. G. H. Lightfoot regarding a labour permit contained in a letter to the council on February 15, The union sincerely regretted having made the ac-. ciisation, and apologised to him. A voice: Is he sure he has not made a mistake now? Tho apology was accepted. , The Coaclnvorkers' and Wheelwrights Society of Queensland asked for information concerning New Zealand awards. The letter was referred to the local union. The Management Committee recommended that the committee be an organising cnmmitteo for the remainder of its term of office, and that the council's' delegates to the Labour Representation Committee be recommended to vote for Mr.-1)'. M'Laren, M.P., as secretary. The report was adopted.Mr. Purchas said he had been informed that there were at least 100.houses in Wellington that had been condemned by the sanitary inspectors, and he moved: "That this council take steps tp force the City Council to carry out its own by-laws and see that those buildings condemned were destroyed in the interests of those whq had to live in them." These houses did not belong to workers. i Mr. W. T. Young moved that the Management Committee be instructed to ascertain the names of the owners of the condemned houses before further action was taken. Mr. Carey moved sis an amendment that the matterbe referred to the Labour Representation Committee, and that the desirableness of making the housing problem.a main plank' in the municipal election be urged upon the committee; He added that the problem had only been tinkered with'in the-past, and the erection of a few workers' h,pmes merely raised the values of the neighbouring properties; In his opinion the barracks on the Mount Cook site shoiild bo razed to the ground and workers' hbmes erected. . . The original motion was carried, and a deputation consisting of Messrs. Nqot, Browne, Conchie, Purchas, and Oliver'was set up to wait on the City Council.
