THE MAYOR'S MARE'S NEST.

. Sir,—Bho worthy Mayor 'of Wellington, discoveries in Scottish Church history with regard to John Knox and tho Sabbath question are a veritable mare's nest. John Knox is simply Mr. Hislop's victim in tho matter of tho secularising of the Sabbath. In your columns on January 1, 1908, there appoared a long contributed article dealing with the calumnies about the Sabbath practico of Knox : and 1 Calvin. That article' was sent Homo to one of the best authorities living on the matter of Reformation history, viz., Professor Lindsay, of Glasgow, and ho pro-, nounced it to be an excellent statement. Mr. Hislop refers to Dean Stanloy. ; ' Stanley, with all his ability,'was an outrageous blunderer in the region of Scottish Church history , as everyone knows that has read the trenchant criticisms of the late Principal; Rainy. Every, fair-minded man who knows history must drop John Knox if ho wantß an authority for introducing . into Wellington the curse of a Continental Sunday.—l am, : etc., . . AN ADMIRER OF JOHN KNOX.
