C. Kirk), giving a copy, of the rer plies sent to the Minister for Internal Affairs to. the objections 'of tl\e. Hutt County and Borough Councils to the proposal. Loss of revenue must necessarily happen in such a.transfer, and thereforeit was no argument \against the suggestion. In. connection with the county's .objection to contributing '_ towards of the pipe bridge, if the Petone Council acquired Gear Island, . Mr. Kirk pointed out that their contribution was still not in proportion to the benefits deprived by distriots still under the jurisdiction of the county. It was not proved to'. be true, that owners of not less. ;than half: an acre.objected to tho proposal. Even so," the other, special circumstances of the case - still warranted the.proposals being'given effect to. As White's Line was.tlio boundary between, the two-boroughs, the up-keep fell on eaoh ; borough,' and therefore 'there was no justification for the Hutt Council's claiming to have any jurisdiction, over the island. Moreover, tho construction- of.", the , : pipe bridge, would bring tho island in a straight lino with Jackson .Street, Petone,. thus affording easy means of communication. ,It had : been stated that the functions of theRiver Board would ultimately be vested.in the Hutt Council, thore being only a small portion of the.Potcrfie Borough in the River Board district, but the contention could, not be,conceded,.especially as there was no p'robability of the board's going out of office.. : y. :
