EDUCATION BOARD.
' MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wellingtoi Education Board was held yesterday, then being present:—Messrs. R. Lee (chairman), A: H. Vile, J. Kebbill, J. G. W.. Aitken, 11.P., and Capt. T. W. M'Donald. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. A.* W; Hogg, M.P., aud W. C. Buchanan. THE BOARD'S FINANCES.. ? The monthly statement of finances'showed that the following accounts were in creditsGeneral account, £1115 2s.;' technical account,' £77 145.; secondary account, £132 19s. 7d.; manual and technical account, £592 13s. lid.; teachers' salaries .account, £1003 18s. 7d.; deposit account,' £9 Bs.' 6d.; total amount in credit, . £2931 16s. 7d. v In debit :—Buildings account', ,'£2327 10s. lid. The credit balanco at 1908, was set dowii.-at. £604 ss. Bd. The paysheet, amounting to'£9S76 9s.':'2d., was.passed for payment.' The contract liabilities' (including sites) were set-down at £4586 13s. 2d. ' CORRESPONDENCE. ' Assembly Hall, Masterton School:—A letter was received from the Education Department, stating that, owing to very heavy demands on the Department regarding new schools, etc., it would bo impossible to make a grant in aid of an assembly liajl at the Masterton School. It was decided to forward a copy of the Department's -letter- to- -the Masterton School Committee.
Hutt Schools: Correspondence from the Education Department and those interested in the establishment of the new school in King's Road, Eastern Hutt, was read. The Inspector-General, on behalf of the Educa-* tion Department', said that the board had been unable to show,! conclusively, that there were sufficient grounds for'the argument that tho additions - to' tlie iria.in school at the Hutt should bo 'deferred Until the completion of the new.school at King's.Road, and adhered to his' : cpnfictioh..-that- the main school should be attended to'before proceeding with the new school. It was decided that the Department bo supplied with, a copy of the board's previous resolution regarding,the necessity for tho immediate construction of the new school at Kind's Road, and that a sub-committee, consisting of, the chairman (Mr. Lee), Captain T. W. M'Donald, and the senior inspector (Mr. T. R. Fleming), be appointed to draft a schedule, of reasons for the board's attitude on the matter, in amplification of the resolution. Terrace District High School: The Education Department wrote intimating that the disestablishment of t(!ie Terrace District High School had been agreed toPongsroa: An application for leave to re? move the teacher's residence at Pongaroa was granted. Silverstream: Consideration of a further application on the subject of the establishment of a new school at Silverstream was held over.
Compulsory technical education: The Wanganui Education. Board forwarded a copy of a resolutioiijjassed by that body, in which it was recommended that attendance at technical continuation classes should be compulsory for scholars after leaving the primary schools. - 'Consideration of: the matter was deferred, for a future'meeting'-.; Tokoniaru School Residences It was decided that a renewal be made of; tho board's application for a'Government grant in aid 1 of tho erection of a; school residence at Tokomaru. . Primary School' Syllabus: Certain correspondence from the North Canterbury Education Board and the Wellington Teachers' Institute on tho subject of the/primary school syllabus wns held over- for a; future meet- .. ing.'> ■',» 'K ' ■Otaki Gorge Schools In-consideration of the offer of. interested residents ; of tho Otaki Gorge district, who offered 1 the necessary land and timber for the establishment of a school, it was decided that application he made ito the Government for the .usual grant in aid. I Eketakuna: That the board bo recommended ,to proceed at once with the preparation of plans' for the/'cutting up of the present Eketahuna school site into four or five sections (excluding tho area occupied by tho teacher's residence), and that on completion of thes"e"plalis tenders be called (1) for the purchase' of 'the sections (one or more) without building's, (2) for the purchase of the section on which the present school; stands, y together .with the school buildings, (3) . for tlie renioVal of -the!present buildings to the new site.
