" - Auckland,' October 29. "The North Island Main Trunk lino. IB now completed,", said Mr. P. E. Baume, speaking at_St Benedict's' Hall last evening,,'"and it is one of the most dangerous things that over happened to Auckland. ; ',lt has been agitated * for by Auckland for ( many years, but unless 'Auckland people ape sufficiently smart and businesslike,- and unless, they can prove thomselves the rivals of Wellington merchants, it' will be the Wcllingtpn pooplo who will get, the great volunio/pf trade from the country the line passes through. I cannot sufficiently impress upon Auckland people the necessity for vigilance, constant and keen vigilance, in order to ■ keep .that trade where .'it rightly belongs. (Applause.) There is ihe old battle of routes v.-hieh hung up the Main Trunk so long going on over the Stratford line, and I hope that some finality will be soon reached over that." .His remarks were'received with applause..:
