, Auckland, October 29. , A movement is afoot in Auckland for the erection of a memorial to dead' veterans, fourteen of whom lie buried in the Waikaraka Cemetery in' nameless graves, not a mark- showing the identity of t[ie departed warriors- resting below. Some'time ago Captain Goodwyn Archer, • superintendent of the Veterans' Home, represented to tho Board of Governors the urgent necessity for some forward movement in the direction indicated. ' Tho board fell in with tho idea, and urged its consideration upon the Veterans' Homo Committee. At tho meeting of tjie committee last week (the Hon. E. Jlitchelson prosiding) the' matter ' was discussed. It appears that Archdeacon Walsh, of Wainiate, has designed a memorial which would last for all time, consisting of an ornamental boundary wall, with inlaid tablets to bear the names, regiments, etc., of tho deceased veterans, who, it should bo remarked, came from all parts of the Dominion. This design, if carried out, would cost from £72 to £125, according to tho class of materials used. Tho committee did not sec its way clear to utilise any of the trust funds for procuring tlio proposed memorial. Tlio Government grant of £500 of last session and tho late Mrs. Knox's munificent bequest of £500-wiir have to'be invested to assist to strengthen the income for the maintenance of tho Home. Consequently an appeal is now being made to . the public throughout New Zealand tn contribute towards a memorial of . some kind;
