DUNEDIN SYNOD.

• .SALARIES OF CLERGYMEN. TELEGttAPU—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, October 27. At the meeting of the Anglican Synod today, Mr. A. Washer brought forward a motion in favour of steps being taken to bring under the notice of vestries throughout the Diocese the advisability of increasing the stipends of clergy. The mover said ho found the average stipend of country clergymen was less than £150 per annum, and he 1 thought such a state of affairs a scandal to the Church. Although at no period in the history of the Church were good men more urgently needed they could not expect men of the right stamp to devote their lives to study and the Cliurch for a mero - pittance. Mr. Talboys, in seconding the motion, said the stipends paid to clergymen were a disgrace to the Church, but the difficulty was to find a remedy. The trouble was due to the fact that there were only a few in such parishes who would support the Church. The Rev. W. Curzon Siggers said the system of paying clergymen would never bo satisfactory until they had a central fund, into which all revenue should bo paid, and from which tho stipends might be paid. The Rev. H. L. Snow and Dr. Hocken also spoke, after which tho discussion was adjourned till, to-morrow.
