A FISH MARKET.
CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch,, October 27.
The question 'of the establishment of a municipal fish market came up at the meet- 1 ing of the City Council last night in the form of a letter from the Ma.rine Department asking the council to take into consideration the question of establishing a fish market in Christchurch. The Mayor said that some time ago the Department refused to sanction a proposal giving the council power to compel all fish to be sold in. the municipal marlcet intended to be established then. Now it would appear that the Department had never heard of such an application beforo. Councillor Cooper said that the market would have been established long ago had the council been granted powers to compel the sale of fish there. "Without such power it would be useless to establish such a market. Ho moved that the council could not agree to the proposal unless the . power mentioned were granted to the council. The motion was seconded by Councillor Gapes. In reply to Councillor Hyde, Councillor Cooper said that the market was intended for the wholesale tra.de only, but he had no doubt that retail stalls would be opened at the market. The Mayor read a letter from the council which had been sent t.n the Colonial Secretary on February 6, 1907, in which it was suggested that the neccssary powers should be granted. It was dpcided finally to forward to the Minister for Marine copies of all the council's correspondence and papers relating to the matter.
