MUSIC IN NEW ZEALAND.

VALUE OF EXAMINATIONS. , [BI TILEGttirn—FKESB ASSOCIATION.) ■ Christchurch, October 2G. In replying to the vote of thanks passed to him by the members of the Society of Professional Musicians *on Saturday night, Mr. Henry. St. George, examiner of Trinity College of Music, spoke on the questions of tlift examinations, and of the standard of music in the Dominion. Referring to tho first, Mr. St. George urged candidates not to attach too much importance to the question of failure to obtain a certificate. If they went up for examination in a proper spirit they would not fail. They should go up with tho view of getting measured under tho uniform system of marks instituted by the college as to the standard they occupied. Even though they might riot get a certificate they obtained the knowledge of their position. Whatever opinions might be held as to the' examinations they were of value in affording an incentive to teachers,- and also a guarantee to parents that the work of teaching was properly done, i He was delighted with the high standard of music taught throughout tho Dominion reflecting great credit on the teachers as a whole.
