LAWN TENNIS.

A tenuis club which has no courts is something of an'iinonialy, but that is the position of the Newtown TeUnis.Club at present. Formerly the club rented courts belonging to the Trinity Methodist' Church, Newtown, but about a year ago the' church authorities decided, at about three months' notice, not to grant a further lease. The club then applied to the Reserves Committee of the City Council for. permission to form courts-on an unused portion of the Town Belt at the top of Constable Street. It is understood tlmt the committee reported to the council in favour of the application, and that theft recommendation, was approved by the city fathers. It was also agreed, on behalf of the Wellington Provincial'' Lgwn Tennis Association, to keep in tho background that body'sclaim for grounds until the Newtoivn Club, whose need was greater, had attained its desire. At its last meeting, however, the City Council decided to have the Town Belt surveyedand mapped, so that when sports bodies applied for grounds these might he systematically assigned to them, without inadvertent overlapping, and without trespassing on land required for roads. No other club wishes to dispute Newtown's' claims to tho area off Constable Street, and the 'council is said to have decided long ago in favour of the application by that vclub, but now the Reserves Committee state that, in accordance with the council's latest resolution, no area can be granted l till the entire Belt has been surveyed and mapped. The Newtown Club, feel aggrieved, because if they are not in a p'osition to commence very soon tho formation of courts they will be without courts all the season, aud already they are losing members from this cause! If they could start work at once on the area they have in mind, it is thought that temporary courts, sufficient for thc present season, would be ready for use in seven or eight weeks' time.
