FIRE ON THE MANUKA.
CBV TELEGRAM—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedln, October 20'.A fire was discovered in No. 4 hold on board the Manuka about 10.45 p.m. on Saturday. The crew had been paid off during the day, and tho lumpers knocked off working cargo about 10.30 p.m. Mr. Lilloy, chief officer, found smoke issuing from No. 4 hold when ho came on-board for the night, and fortunately all the officers and engineers woro on board, most of them being in bed; They turned out promptly ,and soon had the fire under, but owing to tho denso smoke tho Biro Brigade was summoned on tho assumption that the fire was serious. It appears to havo originated amongst some straw and old canvas. None of tho cargo was damaged, and tho loss is small.
