The Hutt Valley Horticultural Society is holding'its'annual rose and carnation show about the .third week of November. The number of: entries is expected to be very large,, some' coming from ithe Wanganui and Hawke's Bay districts. Without doubt, the show will prove a very successful one. Residents of tho Hutt Valley have been subjected during the past few days to a series of bitterly 'cold nortnerlies and southerlies, which havo made cycling or walking anything but pleasant. Whatever wind there is becomes converted to cither a northerly or a southerly, owing to the conformation of the hills of the valley, much to the inconvenience of thos'e living in the locality. An increase in tlio scale of fees charged by the. medical men attending tho Hutt Valley friendly societies is meeting with the most determined opposition, and the Petono Druids • havo decided to deal fully with the matter^ Mr. ]B. W. Blakeley, of Petone, has received an appointment as organist of Knox Churchy Lower Hutt. /.' < The twenty-fifth, anniversary of the Petone Wesleyan .Cliurch will be celebrated on. Sunday.next, and the annual social will be, held on Wednesday week.Mr. T. 'A. Hastings, a well-known oxresident of Petone, was back on Saturday renewing'old acquaintances. - The Question of Liquor v. No-License in the Hutt Electorate is. being hotly debated daily, Jind'. almost hourly. Both parties are keenly 6n the alert, and each hopeful of the final result..' Both sides are straining every nerve, and 1 , are not allowing tho grasß'to grow-under .their feet. 1 Tho No-License people are holding open-air .meetings,,and thoy, have secured a ■ room in Jackson Street, Petone, bearing placards calculated to convince tho 'sceptics'. On the other hand, tho " trade " are-making-preparations for a fighting speech by 'Mr; .Carey Fitzgerald this week, when tho Mayor . (Mr. J. W. M'Eiyan) will take the chair. ' Last .election's figures, which are as follow, will be of interest at this stage:—Thero were 7505 on the roll, of whom 5885, or 78 per cent., recorded their votes, resulting in 'a clear ' majority of 753 votes for No-License, but as .it required a three-fifths majority to carry that' issue, the result was 247 votes short of the necessary number—viz., 3531 out of 5885, or just .1000 more votes than for continuance. Since last election there has been considerable alteration in' the electoral boundaries, Wadcstown, Crofton, KhandallaK, Kaiwarra,,and Ngahauranga being taken out of tho Hutt' electorate. This tfould alter the votes recorded as follow Continuance, 2079; No-license, 2787—a clear majority for No-License of 708 votes; but about 170 votes short of the required three-fifths. About a couplo of months ago, a warrant was issued for. the arrest of Arthur Mudgway on a chargo of stealing a fish from Nanki- ■ veil's fish 'shop;. Lower : Hutt. The police •authorities havo. received information stating that the offender was apprehended at Blenheim on Friday, and lined on Saturday morning- ~ • : The Hutt Valley Rifles (under Captain Ross) arid 'the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles (under .Captain Samuels) are holding a combimid' parade on Tuesday week at the Drill Hall, ,;Lowdr Hutt, after which officers and men of: both companies will fraternise and spend a ; social evening. ' A meeting of tho Lower Hutt School Committee was held on Saturday evening, when therewert • present Messrs. T. - H.. Wilson M'Caskill, Hendry, H. J. Jenkins, Webley (secretary). It was rcported'thatHhe circulars regarding the King's Road- School question had been freely distributed ' The householders', meeting, will bo held - at 7.30 t tcwiight, sharps when Mr. Wilford, and probably several members of. the' Education Board, will bo present. The ■Noj-License League held three openair "meetings on Saturday, one at Petone, one' at 'Lower 'Hutt/ arid t the other at Upper Hutt." Tho speakers'wereMessrs. W. B. Nicholson and A. J. Townsend (secretary) at Upper Hutt. fiood meetings were held in each plaoe, the one at Upper. Hutt being very lively. Yesterday morning Mr. J. S. Baxter, of Invercargill, spoke at the Pririutive Methodist Church, Petone,-and ho entered into tho history'of the Nor License movement in Invercargill prior td and during the time of No-License. On Wednesday evening the League will hold a No-Licen'so lecture and givo a musical entertainment at Taita. Mr. A. J. Black, tlie well-known missioner of Auckland, will start a -week's campaign here on October • 30. A mooting will be held at tho Oddfellows' Hall, Petone,'to-night, when the Rev. A. Dowdney "arid Mr? A; R. Atkinson will occupy tho platform. Thero will also bo a musical programme of'about a dozen items. Thero was a very largo attendance at the Lower Hutt Tennis CluVs green on Saturday afternoon, when a number of enjoyable games were played. Tho club has decided to enter a team for tho association's junior cup competition. '
