The statutory meeting of, Lower Hutt ratopayers in connection with, the , proposal ;to borrow £3000 for the erection of, a gas works, separate from Petone, was held at the Town Hall last evening. The T. A. Peterkin) presided over an attendance of nearly 100 persons. ■ • ■ "In opening the meeting, the Mayor said he would not ask the ratepayers to support the proposal if he did not think the scheme would prove a payable one. If, they did hot act as proposed it would.be greatly regretted in the future. He had been put in the honourable position of Mayor, and if he was not supported; well, he could not;help it. Councillor Ward said that'if'the proposal' was not carried, the - council would bc^forced to come to an agreement at 6s.' Sd.' with Petone, and he pointed out that the Wanganui •price (with the discount) was ss. per 1000 feet. . . Councillor Baldwin moved a formal resolution in the direction indicated, including a suggestion that the poll take place on Novembers.' 1 . . The motion was seconded by Councillor Judd. ■ _ ■ ■ ■ . , . ' In putting the motion', the Mayor remarked that people were; frightened to have the gas works erected. "Give me the concession, " 'he declared, "and I will erect them !" The question of site also,, he'added, had' a lot'to do with it. ". Captain T. W. M'Donald asked whether a poll would be taken however the meeting decided.. . ; ' : • The Mayor: Yes. Mr.'' M'Donald: Then those present will know what to do. It's no uso voting against the resolution. ' A councillor : That is quite clear.'- ; Mr. G. London spoke strongly against the project. V" Councillor Russell explained his position as an opponent of . the scheme.. • Mr. M'Donald moved as an amendment: "That this meeting, not being in favour of a gas. works, approves of the taking of . a poll as a test case. He explained- that_ he did uot wish it to go forth that the meeting was '■ in favour of the erection of the • works. ' In.' seconding the amendment, Mr. Bunny stated that he was not interested in the site question..' What he had said and done, was ■purely as a ratepayer, and not professionally, ■as had.been'suggested. " ] . , - Mr. Birch said the. council had done a great deal of wbrk in connection with the matter, .and even if they were not agreed with, their ;work should be appreciated. ' . A pleasant social was held at Petone last ill' connection with- the closing- of the session of the' Young People's Tpniperance Society. (St. David's Church). The Rev:. ,A. Thomson presided over a good _ attendance. Seventeen members obtained prizes for- the ■ work done during .the past session, and a special prize was presented the treasurer and |secretary, Miss Barbara .ltodger, who. .has been a'very active member. The eveningwas 'spent' 'pleasantly - with music and refresh-' .nients. ' ■. '. . • ■ Thursday; -night saw '• the.' Congregational .Church* sale of work in the Town. Hall, Lower Hutt, "brought to a successful conclusion.' During the evening, a party of friends from .Newtown-provided entertainment. The first : number was a' pianoforte item by the Misses 'Mason' arid Johnson, followed by a 'farce entitled " The Wrong Bos," acted by'eight of ■the visitors. : This was succeeded by- songs from Mrs. Phillips and Mr.E.; Anker.. ' ' : ■ The Hutt Valley Gun Club was to have held a shoot on Thursday for Mr. W. .Henry's £25 trophy, but it had to bo' postponed'indefinitely, as.an insufficient number of birds came-to hand. About' seventy were received, and they were shot off in 'ten shilling- Bweeps, the successful ones being Messrs. Brassell, Jansen, Balfour, Kilmmster, and York. Gunningham took place at.the. .Taita. cemetery yesterday afternoon. Many friends were present, including a number-of friendly society visitors from Wellington. , Speaking to a Dominion representative yesterday .morning, Mr. T. A. Peterkin (Mayor of Lower Hutt and ex-railway officer of 'fifty years' experience), referred :to a published statement , regarding dining cars on the English railways. "I . travelled recently over, two of the most important lines," said'.Mr; Peterkin, "and I:.saw nothing to be compared with the dining .cars now nearly finished at the Petono Workshops, the. latter being mqre roomy, .more comfort-, able, and better appointed. I was quite' surprised to see how beautifully. appointed, they were." One of the four new dining cars for service on' the Main Trunk line was turned out of the Petone, workshops .yesterday afternoon and taken to Wellington. Another will bo ready next week, arid the other two in about a fortnight's time. -. The Lower Hutt School .Committee.have not been idle since last meeting, when it. was decided to canvass householders' in connection with a meeting to be held -'on, Monday night to impress upon the Education Board the necessity for proceeding with the erection of the King's Road school. The various members have been actively engaged during the past ,week,'and they, will report, to a special meeting of the, committee to be held, to-night. Mr'. Wilford and probably several members of the board will be present.
