A PRISONER'S DEATH.

A CHRISTCHTJRCH ENQUIRY.' (BI TELEGRAPH—FRES3 ASSOCIATION.) Ghristchurch, October 23. , Tho adjourned inquest touching the death of James Kilpatrick, was resumed to-day. Deceased died in the Christchiirch Hospital oil Tuesday, after transference from Lyttelton Gaol. : ; • - . Dr. Newell, the prison doctor; said he first saw and examined , deceased on. Thursday, night, October 15, when the man was admitted to the gaol. Deceased'was suffering from disordered digestion' and had a quick pulse. He told witness he had been drink--ing for a good while and was unable to eat. Witness prescribed for him and saw him next day. He was then progressing satisfactorily. On tho Saturday deceased was in a dazed state, breathing quickly, and witness found him then suffering from acute and chronic neuritis. ' He telephoned to Dr. Crooke, of Ghristchurch Hospital, asking if Kilpatrick could be admitted. He further examined deceased on the Sunday morning, and considered him fit to be removed.' ' The coroner said it-was necessary that lie should be fully assured that every precautionary measure had been exhausted before deceased was removed, as this man, being sent to prison, was not a free agent, and it was essential that no doubt should 'exist, on the question of whether or not,tho man had recoived proper care. ' Dr. Newell said he had fully satisfied himself that deceased was in a' fit condition for removal.' In answer to the coroner, Dr. Newell wiid he would liavo sent deceased to the Hospital, as being tho best thing to do, if ho . had been suffering* from pneumonia, as there were not tho nbcessary facilities at tho' gaol to treat such cases. ■ Dr. Crooke, of Christchiirch Hospital, said the pneumonia of tho left lung was a recent development, probably aftor deceased had left tho gaol, but that of tho right lung was not so recent, aJid pulmonary phthisjs indicatod that the' man had probably got a cold' during his drinking bouts, and that pneumonia followed on phthisis. This would not nccossarily be apparent at Dr. Notvoll's examination. Tho coroner (Mr. H. W. Bishop) said he was satisfied that there had .been no negligonco, and found that Kilpatrick had died of heart failure and double pneumonia.
