NEW GUINEA.
RESIGNATION OF THE BISHOP. Tho "Church Times" of September 4 states
The Bishop of New Guinea (Dr. Montagu John Stone-Wigg) has sent in his resignation to the Metropolitan of Queensland as from September .30. ' His lordship has been compelled to resign, owing to continued illhealth. During the past two years he has been able to spend five months only in his diocese,.,and,, .during three of these months he was to'6 ; :unwell>-to•undertake'; any ework. Ho no^ [o fwls, n t|iat,.)je..has' lo.sVthat wonderful power', ofr rgcoVery' whiclr has stood him in such good stead in previous illnesses. His medical adviser says that ho will be totally unfit for-work for at .least a year, and it may be more. In these circumstances, ■ after consultation with the Archbishop of Brisbane (Metropolitan of Queensland) and Bishop Montgomery, he has felt it to be his sorrowful duty to resign. The Bishop's ten years' strenuous work in New Guinea is one of the wonders of modem missionary enterprise. The blow to the Mission is a very serious "ono, for it wil lbe almost impossible to find another leader of such devotion and •statesmanship. The appointment lies with the Australian Bishops, for whom earnest prayer is desired that they, may be guided aright in finding the right man to take up the work. " We regret to learn that the mission is in debt; it is to bo hoped that this will be paid off before the new bishop is appointed. Wo understand that an appeal is to bo made shortly.
