BUTTER BOX TIMBER.
WHAT MR CODDLE SAYS. Mr. Cuddie, Dairy Commissioner, in his report just published admits the need of preservative in Now Zealand butter as at presont produced. He says: — • , " In Denmark and several other countries it-is illegal to add boracic acid or similar preservative to butter, and, were it not for tho fact that New Zealand butter has to undergo a somewhat lengthy period of, storage beforo marketing, it might be weir to consider tho advisableness of following their example in tho interests of our dairy industry as' a whole." -■ j
Recent tests •of butter boxes made from Swedish and Norwegian pine timber have demonstrated that all unpleasant taint can be kept in check by oovoring the insido surfacel of the boxes with paraffin wax. Tho timber, sawn into proper sizes, can be landed at Port Melbourne at a price well within the local rate now ruling, and it is therefore probable that tho imported article will find some favour among Australians in tho present season.
