Proprietors of other boarding-houses at. Hanmi>r ha,ve. frequently complained' of ■ tlii Government competition, and no doubt t-ue Spa will serve a much more valuable sanatorium, which was, it' appoars, the original purpose of the establishment. Speaking on -Iho matter to a Dominion reporter yesterday, Mr. T., E. Donne, general manager o' the Tourist- Department; explained that at the present lis • the Spa is a boarding-house open to tho gt-neral public. It is intended to convert ii into a sanatorium solely for treatment cf the -sick* Many years : age, when there were ho board-ing-houses- at Hanmer, the Government erected a brick, accommodation hmise. Hut since then a great number of private board-ing-houses have come in for, a.'share of the business, a,nd tlie Government realised that the Spa is in competition -with those houses and not ■ altogether full'dling its legitimate purpose.
