BIG FIRE AT TIMARU.
DRAPERY WjVREHOUSE GUTTED. (11l THLEGRirH—I'EI'SS ASSOCIATIOM.) . , ' Tlmaru, October 15. The drapery establishment of Messrs. T. and J. Thomson was completely gutted, by firs this mornin". Tho building was a twostoried one in. tho front portion, and thero were several other rooms on the ground floor-at thoiback;. The fire was discovered in the main shop ■ about 5.30, and then had a strong hold. Tho contents of this portion, with the adjoining showroom, wero completely destroyed, while stocks of sowing machines in . tho upper rooms were also burned. The men's tailoring fend drapery department was not greatly damaged •by fire, but siiioke' and water practically ruined the stock. 'The building, which was a stfb-' stantial ono. of brick, with brick partitions, was unharmed, with the exception of tho 'roof at'tho rear; . t f ;A..veryJicaxjc. stock was carried, estimated at £12,060. Thero was an insuranco of £0500 "in the 1 National, Standard, Victoria, New" Zealand, Royal, North British, Royal Exchange, ana North Queensland offices. The building was the property of tho firm, and was covered by policy of £2500 in the Standard, National, and Now Zealand offices. Yesterday was a holiday, but tho head of tho firm was in tho shop at eight in the evening, when thero were 110 signc ''of fire.'' /■' '
