THE HOLIDAY.
Better than its promise, tho sun shone brightly yesterday, and a finer day for tho crowds of holiday-makers could not have been wished. The Labour Carnival at Wonderland was tho star attraction for several thousands, and the promoters of the gathering must have been well satisfied with its success. Tho opening 0 f tho Kennel Club's annual show was well patronised, and close on 400 volunteors took part in field tactics and rifle practice at Trentham. Conditions were ideal for bowling, and there were specially largo gatherings on the Newtown and Kelburne greens for the opening of tho season by those clubs. The Basin Reserve was thronged with cricketers and other followers of outdoor games, and tho ferry steamers woro heavily laden on their numerous trips across the harbour. From 70 to 80 members of the Boys' Institute enjoyed their annual picnic at Miramar, and numerous excursions wero mado to Lower Hutt and other places. Tho races at Otaki drew a fair number of spectators from the city. . TRAFFIC RETURNS. Tho passenger traffic on both the Government and Manawatu lines yesterday was slightly heavier than on Labour Day last year. Petono, Lower Hutt, and Upper Hutt attracted a large number of visiters, but tho figures were not available last night. Tho bookings at Wellington for the principal stations on the Manawatu line wero as follow: —Khandallah and Crofton, 300; Plimmerton, Porirua, and Paekakariki, 800; Otaki (two trains), 1000. Close on 600 booked for Otaki at Palmerston North and intermediate stations. A much larger number of passengers was carried on the tramways yesterday than Labour Day last year. Traffic was heaviest on the Miramar lino, upon which between 40 and 50 cars wero used. Island Bay attracted moro visitors than any of tho remaining suburbs which have a tramway service. The cash takings yesterday amounted to £579. IN OTHER CENTRES. (BT TKI.EORAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, October 14. Labour Day was celebrated to-day by the usual trades procession through the city, followed by sports in the Domain. The weather during the afternoon was very unfavourable, several showers falling. Napier, October 14. Labour Day was observed as a whole holiday b.v the trades and in oflicos, and as a ■ partial holiday by tho shops. The morning was fine, but showers fell in the afternoon. Tho only holiday fixture was the Napier Park races. Timaru, October 14. Labour Day was observed as a close holiday. The chief attraction was the quickstep at the band contest. The weather was fino at the start, but heavy rain fell at 3.30. Christchurch, October 14. Labour Day was observed as a close holiday to-day. The weather was fine, and all outdoor entertainments were very largely patronised. The tramway traffio during tho day was unusually heavy. Dunedin, October 14. The • weather was fine but unsettled, a close holiday being observed. Tho principal functions were Labour Day sports at Outram and races at Wingatui. Cisborne, October 14. Labour Day was celebrated hero for the. first time to-day. There was a splendid trade procession. Feildlng, October 14. There was no special recognition of Laboui Day here. Nelson, October 14. Except for a few picnics, Labour Day was not observed fiere. The shops were open, but tho factories and some offices were closed. (BT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL 'CORRESPONDENT.) Masterton, October 14. The Labour Day holiday was observed by factories, banks, and Government offices. There were no sports or amusements of any kind. Tho day was cold and showery.
