BOWLS

OPENINC OF VICTORIA CREEN. The perfect weather experienced yesterday lent a zest to outdoor sports of all kinds, and nowhere was this moro apparent than on tho billiard-table greens of ,the various bowling clubs, which aro now fairly embarked for season's voyage. The Victoria Club took advantage of tho holiday to open its green on tho sunny slopes of Mt. Victoria, and, thanks to a variety of lucky circumstances, tho function proved as enjoyable as could bo desired. In declaring tho green open, the president (Mr. F. Kitto) extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, particularly tliank"lß the ladies for .their gracious presence. Mr. 1 resident also drew attention to the improvements that had been effected in tho grounds and pavilion during the winter recess, and in that respect mentioned the efforts of the ground committeo (Messrs. -E. On behalf of .the club ho thanked the ladies for having provided afternoon tea and decorated tho rooms in the pavilion. Tho JJelburno Bowling Club opened its season under the most favourable circumstances yesterday. Tho president, Mr. W. He thanked tho members of tho Ladies' Bowling Club for their assistance in supplying and serving the Saturday teas, ana referred to the contemplated visit of the Patea Ladies'.Club to play a return match, the Kelburne ladies having visited Patea last, season. Bowling, he remarked, now took a prominent position among sports, there being a kind of freemasonry amongst bowling" clubs, which was highly gratifying. In concluding, he wished tho'members a pleasant afternoon and asked Mrs. Dinnie to declare tho season open by throwing the jack, which she did amidst _ cheers. The green proved to be in splendid order. The following matches were then played:-. President v. Vice-President. President —Anderson, S. Hamerton, R. Carter, J. G. Dawson (s.), 13;.' DATE OF ASSOCIATION'S TOURNAMENT. A good deal of dissatisfaction is being expressed among bowlers _at tho decision to alter the date of the Northern Bowling Association's tournament to be hbld in Napier in January next. The dato of tho tournament is usuallv fixed according to a recommendation ol tin; clubs in the town where it is to be hold. The Napior suggestion was that it should commence 011 January 4, and satisfaction was expressed by those players who manage to work it in with their New Year holidays. Now. without any explanation, the association has altered tho opening day to January 11, with tho result that it will prohibit a good many local bowlers from attending. The latter date is particularly awkward for warehousemen (who are. largely given to bowls), as it will clash with the annual stocktaking.
