Summer. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. Fiscal, Wellington.—On tho old course. REMINDER. In connection with the spring meeting of tho Masterton Racing Club, owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events, except the Maiden Scnrry, close with tho secretary, Mr. A. Hathaway, at his office, Lincoln ltoad, Masterton, to-mor-row (Friday), at 9.30 p.m. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meoting will bo concluded to-day. •Mr. C. O'Connor, of Auckland, has been appointed starter for the Spring Meeting of tno Wellington Racing Club. Ronald Cameron, who holds a retainer from Mr. G. F. Moore, has shifted to Wanganui, and will in future reside at Tayforth so as to be on hand to rido Signor, Dusky Moriij and Co. in their gallops. The Australian Jockey Club's meeting will be concluded at Randwick on Saturday, anil on tho same day the racing will commonco at Caulfield. The hurdler, Rydo, who ran third to Aeolus at Randwick yesterday, is thirteen years of age, and probably tho oldest jumper at present racing on tho other side. Mooltan, who won tho Craven Plato yesterday, did not start in that event last year, when Mountain King won. Auldearn's win in tho Waipatu Hack came as a surprise to Wellington followers of tho game, but a refei-enco to tho book shows that out of nino starts last season he was four times first and threo times second. Thero is nothing like form. H. Cairns is to rido Sir Frisco at tho Otaki meeting next week. Mr. H. Brown recently had an offer for tho chestnut gelding Hydrant, but would not entertain it. Hydrant, who has been located at Day's Bay for sorao time past, is said to bo as well as ever ho was, and as he is only nino years of ago ho should bo equal to -winning many a race yet if tho Victoria Racing Club sees fit to remove his disqualification. H. Donovan is mentioned as tho rider of Master Delaval in tho New Zealan'd Cup. Other' jockeys : aro announced as follow:— Zimmerman (F. D. Jones), Frisco (A. Oliver), Moral (D. Ivomp), Tangimoana (\V. Youug), Maliuta (C. Jenkins), (Jhlando (R. Barlow), Tho Lark (W. Price), Bonny Glen (11. W. King), Signor (R. Cameron), Moloch (R. Hatch), Stratagem (F. E. Jones), ltiilcmaid (W. H. M'Kay), St. Joo (L. G. King), Ringdove (J. M'Combe), Seaman (Geo. Price), Gleuullin (F. Cress), Field Gun (F. Douglas). ■ According to figures given by the special commissioner of the London '"Sportsman," StbckwelPs brother, Rataplan, started t>2 times, during his four and five-year-old seasons, won 38 races, and covered-123 miles in all his races. This probably is still a record.

_ The New Zealand jockey L. H. Hewitt has ridden fifteen winners in England this season. The aged gelding Putty (St. Lcgor—Ellerslie), who had to bo destroyed recently in • Victoria, had. -boon' on the track for seven season's, and won close on £3000.. in stakes. Ho was, a. good porformer in New' Zealand, winning among other eyents tho Auckland Cup, Avondale Cup, Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, and Auckland Racing Club's York Welter, but since going to tho other side, he was only successful in one race, the Prince- of Wales Stakes at Randwick. Now that Putty is gone, and Mehvood is retired, Scotty is about tho only representative of St. Lcger left to, graco tho racing track. According to a cable received in Christchurch, tho New Zealand jockey, T; Cahill, had tho mount on Aeolus at Randiwck last Saturday, and would no doubt ride the bay gelding again yesterday. Mr. S. Whitworth, owner of Aeolus, is credited with having a good win on Saturday, and would be sure to back his horse for a good amount again yesterday. Although beaten in the Grantham Stakes yesterday, Artillerio put up a smart performance, for she must have' got to tho end 'of the mile in lmin. 40sec., and she . would have to carry about Bst. 21b. Tho Royal Artillery filly seems to be unable to get nearer than second, no matter what tho opposition is like. As a two-year-old in tho Dominion, she ran four times second, once third, and once unplaced. .On Saturday she is engaged in the Members' Handicap, ono mile and a furlong for three-year-olus. :Kopu, who was successful in tho Maiden at Hastings yesterday, is a half-brother to that good pdfformor Mahutonga. Ho has an engagement in the Ilawko's Bay Guineas to-day, and C. Jenkins lias been engaged to ride him. The owner of Formative was very anxious to securo Jenkins's services, but Mr. W. J. Douglas was in first. Tho owner of Bobrikoff stated yesterday that his liorso is undergoing a New Zealand Cup preparation, so apparently, if all goes well in the meantime, lie is a sure starter He will be seen under silk at Napier Park next weok. After the races at Hastings yesterday, T. Quinlivan gave a couple of two-year-olds a 6pin with tho colours up. The Kilclieran colt in this stable is a very big fellow, and will require a lot of time. When at three years old ho will probably stand 17 hands high. Tho well-known Hastings trainer, H. Moore, will most likely retiro from active service after ihe Nejv Zealand Cup is run. At present Moore has Grand Slam in preparation for the big handicap, and after that is dccided ho "will enter into business on his own account. Master Douglas was very unlucky in tho Hack Hurdles at Hastings yesterday, for, with a fair run at all, ho would havo won. The steoplechaso gelding Audax is being spelled at Karainu. He is allowed to run in the paddock all day, but is stabled at night. Joo Griffiths, who fell off Forest in the Hack Hurdles at-Hastings yesterday, had the misfortune to break his arm, while ho also received a nasty wound over his right eyo. The Auckland trainer, D. Moraghan, has commenced tho now season very well. Ho led in several winners at tho Avondalo meet, ing, and at Hastings yesterday tho tlireo liorses ho had engaged all won raccs. Master Delaval and Master Soult are both in tho Now Zealand Cup, and the latter will incur a penalty for his win. Thoso who contended that California had beaten no horses of any noto last season might bring the same argument to bear in connection with his performance in tho King Edward Handicap yesterday. But by carrying his big impost to .victory in tho greasy going at Hastings, and boating his field witii tho greatest of ease, he proved himself a good horse, and he is sure to run creditably in tho weight-for-aga l-acos this season.
