PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.

The annual report of the Wellington Philosophical Society, which will hold its annual meeting this evening, states that five members have resigned and three have died. Among theso was Sir James Hector, K.C.M.G., who was identified with the society from its formation. It is proposed to commemorate his work in a suitable memorial. The membership of the society is at present 100. The report notes with satisfaction the establishment of scientific research scholarships. A reference is also made to the scientific expedition to the outlying islands of New Zealand. Scientific knowledge was distinctly increased by researches of the specialists who took part in the expedition, says tho report. In compliance with the suggestion of the council, the Surveyor-General lias been good enough to promise to publish the results of the fixing by the Lands and Survey Department of "bench" marks on the coast of New Zealand. The publication of tho results would be of special interest to , those engaged in the study of the problem of land elevation and depression. The financial statement shows, including a balance of £47 Is. 2d. from last year, receipts amounting to £143 15s: 2d., total expenditure £103.135. 3d., credit balance of £42 Is. lid., amount of research fund £44 18s. 6d., a total sum in hand of £87 os. sd. Tho following are tho nominations for tho council for 1909: —President, Mr. Augustus Hamilton; vice-presidents, Messrs. G.. V. Hudson, F.E.S., C. E. Adams, B.Sc.: council, Mr. T. W. Kirk, F.L.S., Dr. A. K. Newman, Mr. Martin Chapman, K.C., Dr. Ernest Dillon Bell, Di. Charles Munro Hector, and Professor H. B. Kirk; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Thomas King; auditor, Mr. E. 11. Dymock, A.I.A.N.Z.
