ARRIVAL OF THE ATHENIC. Tho arrival of tho Athenic yesterday caused a considerable rise in tho population statistics of New Zealand, nearly 700 passengers being on board, booked for various ports of tho Dominion. The third-class passengers totalled 597, all workers, apparently; included among theso aro 78 families. Tlio " assisted" immigrants number 237 adults and 88 children, representing, in declared capital, £8674, although 89 of the number are "nominated" immigrants, i.e., nominated by persons in New Zealand, who liavo become responsible for their independence of State charity. Tho destinations of tho passengers are :— For Wellington, 23 second-class and 199 third; Auckland, 7 second and 137 third; Lyttelton, 12 second and 64 third; Napier, 25 third j Nelson, 1 third; Westport, 22 third; Picton, 1 second and 1 third; Gisborne, 1 second and 12 third; Dunedin, 9 second and 38 third, Bluff, 3 second and 19 third; Oamaru, 7 third; Timaru, 7 second and 18 third; Wanganui, 2 second and 26 third; Greymouth, 1 second and 1 third; and New Plymouth, 3 second and 27 third. There aro 28 domestic servants. Of theso 6 wero for Wellington, 9 for Auckland, 4 for Lyttelton, 1 for Timaru, 3 for Port Chalmers, 2 for New Plymouth, 1 for the Bluff, and 2 for Westport.
