' MASTERTON. The secretary of the-Masterton A. and P. Association has received from the New Zealand Sheepbreeders' Association a handsomo silver and oak shield, which is to bo won outright at the next show in tho champion Southdown ram class. While playing at the residence of Mr. C. 11. Payne, Pino Street, on Monday afternoon, the two-year-old daughter of Mr. John Colo, Homebush, was struck by a falling ladder and rendered unconscious. Concussion of the brain set in, aud tho unfortunate child died in the Hospital a few hours later. Anglers report a plentiful supply of goodsized fish in tho rivers round Masterton this season. Close on 100 licenses have so far been issued here, aud those enthusiasts who got out early with rod and lino have been rewarded with good "bags," in some cases tho limit for a day's catch, viz., 201b. . Tho Volunteer School of Instruction which has been in progress in tho local Drill Hall for a week was terminated on Monday night. Tho school has been well attended all through, and the lectures have proved exceedingly valuable. Captain Browne, the instructor of the Defence Department's instructional staff, who has been hero during tho week, left for Palmerston North yesterday. Eight builders tendered for the work of erecting a brick chapel at St. Bride's Convent. Messrs. Taylor and Hodge were the successful firm, the contract price h being £1099. ' 1 Inspector Iload, of the Department of Labour, has been paying the annual visit to the shearing sheds in this district.
