( I,'.MINING NEWS. - -The'- following, -items are taken from our Northern 'exchanged ' manager of the Magnet mine reports that tho north drive on the main reef is passing through favourable sandstone country; but the reef formatioriMs now divided into two branches, which appear to be going away from, qne another..,;. The footwall branch will average 12in.''in thickness of quarts of a kindly .character.' 'During' the week- a tfoiv colours of •gpld were se'en in tho stone., The'liatigingwall portion is of. a. jjjibbly description,'mid by dish 'td'st 'a M fair; prospect-of loose gold may bo ob- : taincd.' /This . part - of the reef will average about, Bin. in' width, and tho manager intends to continiio driving upon it for, some time, as 'by :tlxe„present'itfend of the .footwall branch :it, wyf .be impossible to carry'the two branches ;in the one.drive. Tairiia '"Dawn.'.4-The drive in tlie Tairiia Dawn mine-is now.in a ; distance of 36ft,, and a reef -is' showing in the face, which. give's .a- little .gold ..by spanning with tho dish.., Its size in stringers and all combined is fully 4ft.., 2ft. .of which. is fairly, solid. ... . , Brilliant Block,—Jn the Brilliant Block mine tho-drive to intersect the Brilliant lode has been extended' 25ft'. : ,' making a total distanco of 82ft. driven to date. The country being penetrated is all that can be desired., A small leader cut during the week gave an assay value of 235. per ton. There is still about-30ft. of drive before getting under the outcioo. The

nien- prospecting.on the surface have not, as yet, discovered anything of any special valuo, but dish prospects, are still encouraging. Kuranui-Caledonian.—No. 1 level crosscut in the. Kuranui-Caledonian mine ia still penetrating. country of unfavourable description for gold. The rise on Duko's reef is passing through a. firmer class of country, but thero is little improvement in.tho roof. At No. -4 level a start ,has been made to. drive on a leader which was cut when driving the crosscut for the Cambria reef at about 10ft. in from the Waiotahi crosscut. The leader is Biri. ; wide, and as'' it' appears. to' bo running parallel, with the "Waiotahi crosscut tho manager considers that it will probably prove to' bo v branch of. the Cure, reef that was sunk on near ' the Waiotahi .boundary and produced some'very rich stone when , worked below No. I level. In order . to ascertain whether tlioro are any more leaders comitig into, it at the intermediate- level, • a drive south' along tho hangingwall.of the Cambria reef has been commenced. Fair progress is being made with Nos. ! and 4 stopes,. and li little picked stono comes to'hand, occasionally. • Champion.—There is no change to report regarding the -battery i levol in the Champion mine: ; 'I'lie country remains very, hard; and the contractors' have driven -Bft. -during the past we'efc.',The' winze from -the surface, at tho smithy- level is now connected with the battery level, and there is,now direct connection from the. surface* workings-to the battery. The last 12ft. sunk has consisted' of boulders and clay.. 111 the first intermediate abovo the smithy level 15ft. have been- driven - .on' an. easterly course. There are indications here of picking up an extension of the Champion lode, the water-race. should be completed within 10 days. The suction gas nlant will by then be in'readiness'to give the stampers a trial. Ml the material'required to carry this out is now to-hand. Tho drive on the Champiotv North ■ property'is in a distance-of 118 ft., and values are'contained in quartz stringers intermixed .with'tho country. The general average of the.:whole.is lis. per ton. Tho reef being driven for; is approximately; GOft. ahead.. Kapowai.—The stopes on. If'lsaac's leader in tho Kapowai ,'mino showing no improvement, the mauager .has. removed the men to No. 1 level, where a large block of ground has been stoped out,-and'a little prospecting will be done .underfoot., .-At the intermediate level the drive going east has been extended 12ft., and. it' carries a little ore, which is not payable. The.crosscut in the footwall of. M'lsaac's leader ,ia' in 15ft., and a change has' come in, the prospects now being encouraging. Scandinavian.—The leading slope north of the rise in the Scandinavian mine has been carried forward.lßft., and- the drive timbered up for that distance. The footwall portion of the reef being broken out carries'ore of a liighlyniinerdlised. character, intermixed with* veins of quartz and silica; and " generally looks very promising. . - In the north drive the reef formation is still about Bft. wide, the centre; portion- 'consisting of stringers of. quartz, interlaced with bands and bunches of mineral. The footwall portion of the reef, which is about 3ft. wide, is. carrying ore of a, kindly nature.. manager of the Taihoa mine reports'that very fair progress continues to bo. made'with the advancement of the main crosscut,'which is now in a total -distance of -362 ft. A. splendid class of :country continues to be met . with as the drive is ; pushed,, ahead,' arid, during, tho past week, a nice-looking reef 12in. wide' W£i3-'but;.,bu't',.no.gold was. obtainable by dish ■ test... . No. 1, or, main' reef,; should; be intersected , within tlie. next ;50ft. of driving, provided it.keeps.the same underlie as in the surface . workings'. ; Kirikiri.r—The. low level in the Kirikiri mine, is being continued,'and the reef has improved during the week. Tho lode is now about 2ft. in thickness, is of a more solid character,, and- is showing some nico mineral. There is still a, lot of water- coming from the. face. There, is- also; an improvement in the country, it having beconie much firmer, and is. showing. ; nice,.- mineral .seams. ' "I expect to .meet, with -a further improvement, seeing that ..we have a good stretch of :grou"nd • to drive before w'e-.reach., the; winze . on this reef," says tlio manager. Heavy timber is being placed in as. tlie-level advances, and a further. distance of 10fK : has. been driven.-Over 200 ft. have now been .driven on the line of reef at this levol, and all closely timbered.' Tairiia Conqueror.—ln the Tairua Conqueror niirie the prospecting level has been extended a further distance- of 10ft. during tho week. No. 1 reef has been intersected on tho footwall, and passed through a distance of Gft.,.with no signs of tlie hnrigingwall. A small prospect is obtainable from the borings of the reef, which is composed of a very kindly class of quartz. There is a material.difforenco 'in both underlie and strike of the'i'cef,'- its underlie being 4 in 6, and strike more ivest of north than at first expected. In consequence of this a considerable distance has yet to be driven in the main' crosscut before the intersection of" reef is expected—approximately a further 50ft. from measurements to date, Now that' sufficient data 'are to hand, work has been. suspended in this levol, and the main crosscut will be pushed ahead with three shifts. The main crosscut has been extended 9ft., making-the . distance now driven 145 ft. Some bars Of very mild sandstone have been met with in penetrating the last few feet, and the country generally is of. a good quality. For the purpose of facilitating, the - intersec-•tion;of-NOi-.-l reef a-slight -turn to the "southwest has been, taken in this level,- and under favourable circumstances the' manager expects to intersect tho reof in about throe weeks. Waihi. Extended.—Development work in. the deeper areas of the Waihi Extended Gold Mining Company's property' is being steadily pushed forward, and before long the exploita'tion of a new lovel (No. 5) at a depth of about 560 ft. from tho surfneo will bo undertaken. The shaft for:this level is now down to within about 20ft." of 'tho required distance, and has lately been going through a .good class of. country for the existence of a reef, a stringer having been met with in the. floor of the shaft a day or'two'ago. Everything should be in readiness to commence driving before the.close of tlio present year," and to facilitate the work of opening up an air-compressor plant is to be installed, and two rock drills em] Joyed. The No. 2 reef should be in' hand soon after driving operations are commenced, but, according to the manager, some hundreds of feet will have to be driven in an easterly direction from the shaft before the No. 1 lode is picked up. As advanced upon' going east in the Junction Company's ground at No. 4 level'their lode is disclosing-one of. tho best blocks of pay ore in the mine. At No. 4 level in the Extended the principal work in progress is the putting up a rise on the No. 2 lode, and between the No. 4 and 3 levels a fair.-sized block of milling dirt has been opened up.
