"THE LAST SPIKE."
COMPLETION OF THE MAIN TRUNK . LINE. A few weeks ago the local Chamber of Commerco wrote to the Minister for Railways (the Hon. W. Hall-Jones), stating that tho chamber would be pleased to entertain the members of the Ministry at luncheon in honour of tho completion of . the Main Trunk line. Mr. Hall-Jones suggested that it might be better to wait a little until the line was nearer completion for actual traffic purposes, and then co-operate with an Auckland movement in conncction with the same affair. . The proposition is that towards the end of the present month, or early in November, the Ministry should be entertained at luncheon in Wellington by the Chamber of Commerce, and that at tho conclusion of the luncheon representative members of the chamber take a trip to Auckland over tho now lino as guests of tho Government. It is also probable that tho Auckland Railway League will arrange some function to mark the completion of tho lino, and it has been suggested that tho members of the leagueshould meet the guests of the Government at some spot about half-way, where possibly a "driving-of-the-last-spike" function coulcl be held, and so mark a very important event in the history of tho Dominion.
