Tho Shops'and Offices Act has been some-, what disregarded in Levin for some time, but tlie Inspector - of Factories put in his appearance in the town a 1 week or so ago, and many tradespeople were fined for keeping their .shops, etc.,. opon during half-holi-days. 'Amongst , those fined at tho last sittings of the Court for keeping their shops open, wero Mr. J. Phillips, cycle agdnt; Mr„ 11. E., Henderson, cyclo agent; I\lr. J. W. Thompson, bookseller; Hugh Hall, tobacconist; and the Lovin Meat Co., Ltd, was fined for employing a carter on his half-holiday. Tho fines inflicted wero light, as this was tho first time such offences fiad been brought before tho local Court.Mr. J. &. HankinSj.who has been laid up for some time, .owing to severe heart attacks, had a relapse on Saturday evoning, but ■is 'now ( as well as can be expected. Thero are two well-grown oranges on exhibition' in Levin that wero grown on a place in Manakau, a few miles distant. The meeting of, tho Weraroa Sports Club held on Friday night last mado satisfactory arrangements in corincction_ with the. programme -for "their next meeting, to be held on November 9. The programme is' lengthy and full of variety, and, as well as manytrophies, the club- is giving somewhere near £40 in' prize money. At.the last meeting of the Domain Board a vote 'of thanks was accorded to Mr. Mayo, nurseryman, for' his generous donation of one hundred. 1 trees in connection with the local streots • beautifying scheme.
