PROVINCIAL NEWS. (FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS.)

PALMERSTON. Tho annual siro horse parade, under tho auspices of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, was held in tho Show Grounds on Saturday. Thero was a fair - attendance of the farming community. Thoroughbreds were poorly represented, only Strowan (Lochiel— Marion) and tho imported English horse Sir Laddo being present. The conformation and quality of tho latter were greatly admired. Show draughts were very much better, and this was no doubt a reflection of the interests of the district. About a dozen were in attendance, and all shown in the best of condition, tho quality ranging from extremely good to decidedly poor. Tho rest of the parade was mado up of ■ trotters, hackneys, and ponies. On Wednosday next the recently-established gasworks at Foxton will be opened, and tho seaport of Manawatu lighted with gas for tho first time. Tho syndicate responsible for this innovation is largely composed of AVellington business men who have secured a concession to light the town for fifteen years. Mr.. Robinson, tho Government engineer, has paid another visit of inspection, together with members of the Borough Council, to tho protective works and groynes constructed to .provent erosion by the Manawatu River. _ His further suggestions will bo embodied in a report to the' council at its next meeting.
