British officials in boats rescued many, climbing with them up trees and to the tops of the temples. The River Mussi, from a rushing torrent 60 feet deep, became a trickling stream in two days. Starving and destitute victims of the floods are looting tho grain and liquor- shops in the devastated area. Catholic priests#showed extreme heroism, and by their coolness immensely encouraged the panic-stricken natives.
