THE FISHING SEASON.
Yesterday was a suitable day: for tlie opeil ing of the trout-fishing season, but 'so .fat no startling catches are reported. Wainui- . o-mata was well patronised, with fairly good results, notwithstanding an, adverse. wind. Waikanae . attracted a few anglers,' and a correspondent writing from there yesterday says:—"The Waikanae River is. very low and clear. The fish are running even smaller than last year,, and aro in poor, condition. There are indications that the green .weed will be a trouble quite early in ..the season unless thero. aro some heavy rains." This is not very encouraging for those - who ara accustomed to spend their week-ends- on the / Waikanae. The fishing season was opened to-day, and several parties of anglers have gone out to the Waimakariri, Rakaia,f.and.Selwyn rivers, all of which are reported, to be well-stocked with fish, Some fair catches have also been made in the Avon, one angler this;mornings securing nine fish, and another eleven. Others secured small bags of ones and twos, while others again had no luck whatever.
