A CLEVER INVENTION.
COURSE RECORDER AND INDICATOR A Wellington invention that may prove .of servico to. navigation has been brought into use within the past few months, and in a series of trials which have taken place on various steamers has shown its efficiency. Tho invention is a course recorder and indicator, and consists of an clectrical attachment to a Sir Wm. Thompson compass, and a sketch cnart. marked out in squares tc indicate degrees and minutes. Its object is to . record -the course steered 011 tho chart by means of an automatic pen, which, should it travel over a certain line marking the distance from the true course, puts the electrical apparatus in action, and an alarm bell, fitted up in the captain's cabin, indicates that the vessel is diverging over the margin given' to the steersman. Tho recorder'can be set to any given distance (of time)—one, two, three, or ten minutes. It is stated that testimonials ' eulogising the' invention havo been, received from every master on whoso boat it has been tried, and all are of the opinion that it will provo an aid to safe navigation. Another of the advantages it possesses is its utility to define the courst in cases where the sun is obscured tor d»/ t at * time. The. Recorder. it to. b* tested on tho Maheno, which leaves for, Sydney today, and will probably be installed on another vessel for the return trip. On# future that i« claimed for th» invention is the accuracy with which it shows the slightest deviation from the exact course—a first-class tell-tale as' to'the steering qualities, of the vessel. !'
