GAS FOR FOXTON.
TO BE READY ON WEDNESDAY. Mossrs. Norwood and Pearson, of Wellington, the contractors for the new gas works at Foxton, handed over the works to the proprietary . yesterday, and. the gas is to be turned on for the first time on Wednesday evening next, October 7. The syndicate at tho back of tho enterprise is • constituted mostly of Wellington men, with Mr. J. J'. K. Powell as chairman, Mr. H. F. Allen as secretary, and Mr. 0. Bnerp as solicitor. They have scoured a concession to light the- town and supply the inhabitants of tho borough with coal gas for a period of 15 years from April B'last, and are to adhere to the following standard rates:—For ordinary consumption, 10s. per 1000 cubic feet; for power, 7s. per 1000 cubic feet; for heating and cooking, 7s. 6d. per 1000 . cubic feet. Tho borough is to pay a uniform price of 7s. 6d. per 1000 feet of gas. Tho plant for the works was supplied by Messrs. Newton, Chambers and Co., of tho ThorneyclifFo Ironworks, Sheffield, tho subcontractors being Messrs. Bryan, Donkin and Co. of Sheffield (exhauster), and Gibbons Bros., of Dudley, England (retort and ironwork). Mr. T. W. Butcher, represents Messrs. Newton, Chambers and Co. jn Wellington. Tho members of the syndicate will journey to Foxton on Wednesday next to bo present at tho formal opening of tho works. . .
