Shackleton,'.Labour M.P. for the Clitheroe Division of Lancashire, in a speccli at Colne, declared that the unemployed numbered a million and a quarter, of whom half were general labourers. Ho advocated a penny or a halfpenny rato to start municipal works, pending the report of the Poor Law.Commission. Mr. W r . C. Steadman, Labour M.P. for Central Finsbury, advocated more farm colonies, similar to that at Hcllesley Bay. The Government, ho said, ought to purchase and extend tho London Docks.
A CURATE'S SELF-SACRIFICE. VOLUNTARY LECTURER FOR LABOUR. (Rec. October 1, 0.50 a.m.) Londorif September 30. Tho Rev. Mr. Roberts, formerly a curate at Hawarden, is so impressed with the seriousness of the unemployed problem that, without quitting the ranks of the clergy, ha has resigned the vicarago of Saint Swithin, Lewisham, to act,.as voluntary lecturer for the Independent Labour party.
