MR. BRAITHWAITE AT NGAHAURANGA. ! Mr. J. W. Braithwaite, a candidate in the Liberal interest for the Suburbs seat, addressed'his .'first meeting, which took place at Ngahaiirahga, last night. There was. a large'.attendance of electors, -Mr.- Thomas Bannister, being voted to the chair. The candidate,' who received an attentive hearing, stated that he had como forward for the following reasons(l). Because he claimed to' have solved the unemployed difficulty; (2) with the object of -introducing proposals," tho adoption of which would result in', the stamping but of'disease among cattlej ; and'(3) to, advocate the extension of the educational system. -With regard to; this question of the unemployed his proposal was that- all the unions' should be amalgamated, thereby forming a universal union.' Every .employee, male, and female alike, should be required to be' a. member. If the subscription wore'fixed at 6d. per .week, and the workers!numbered 200,000,.the i&omo would be £260,000 per annum. TW money could forthwith be invested by. the: State in farms, sawmilling country, etc., " whero the unemployed could obtain remunerative work. Mr.'Braithwaite, next .proceeded to unfold a plan whereby disease among cattle could, he asserted, bp effectually stamped out' in a very brief period. At the present time there were,>he. sa.id, 1,800,000 .'cattle' in the Dominion. , The provisions which sought to prevent the'sale of infected milk were, however, quite inadequate. His plan was to levy a tax of sixpence in respect of every head of cattle.' .In;that'way-a fund of £45,000 per would be provided. As the law stood at present £4 was tho most that was paid as compensation for a cow that was condemned. The candidate lield that' school committees should have'extended jurisdiction and that greater weight should .be attached to their 1 recommendations by bon.rds. No child under tho age of 18. years should be allowed to work full time. If his proposals with reference' to the unemployed difficulty wore given effect to, "it would not bo necessary to engage child labour at such an early age'as at present. • ■ " In conclusion, Mr. Braithwaite stated that' at an early data he would deal with other questions. Those which he had touched upon were tho main planks of his platform. After a hearty vote of thanks had been passed, the meeting, concluded. Mr. J. W.
