THE RAICAIA. This trip ,to tho Dominion the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rakaia is in command of Captain Barnes, who was chief officer on the, vessel last voyage. Tho other officers of tho steamer are 'as follow:—Chief Mr. F. Beilis (late .of the'Orari); second, Mr! A. P. Bcet6ii ; -(late of the Papanui and Tongariro)third,! Mr. M. M. Downton;" fourth Mr. R. THE WHANGAEOA. A favourable opportunity enabled tho scow Whangaroa to sot sail for Wanganui on Saturday to load a cargo of timber for Sydney. She lias been refitted and rerigged at Wellington, having' been towed to port some months' ago by the collier Eegulus. > THE SYDNEY BOAT. At 3 p.m. on Saturday the Huddart-Parker liner TJlimaroa ' left Sydney for Wellington direct. She has on board 302 passengers for fvew Zealand, and 7GO tons of cargo for discharge at_ Wellington. The Ulimaroa is due here on Wednesday' morning, and the following afternoon leaves for Hobart and Melbourne, via Southern ports. Newcastle advices report that the Cevic arrived there yesterday from Port Chalmers. Captain Burgess has relinquished his temporary command of the Kaiapoi, his place boing taken by Captain Stringer. , Farewell Spit reports that the Kini, ivamona, and Otterburn passed east for Wellington between 11 a.m. and noon yesterday. Captain Bernech arrived; from Lyttelton by the Maori yesterday, and takes command of the Talune at Wellington to-day. Only one passenger steamer arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, the Maori, and she brought a large number of passengers. An unexpected arrival in the harbour yesterday afternoon was the ketch Kereru, which anchored in the stream. Her sailing port is not announced. Mr. R. A. Williams has joined the Aparima as second officer, and Mr. Plowman,, late third officer of the Corinna, joined the Aparima as third officer. - Royal Naval Reservists aro to undergo their, drill at Lyttelton on October 5. The Pioneer, which has been overhauled, in Syd-ney,'is-to be the visiting warship. : To-morrow the Corinna will enter upon her summer running, leaving Dunedin for Northern ports, She arrives here on Thursday, and proceeds on to New Plymouth and • Onefiunga. The Talune, from Auckland direct, arrived yesterday'.' afternoon. She leaves for Na'pior, Gisborne, and Auckland' this .afternoon in the Waikaro's run, the latter'vessel'is relieving the Warrimoo.in the intercolonial service. While at Lyttelton the lonic , loaded . the following carg0:—16,979 carcasses frozen mutton, ,'lO cases sweetbreads, 1000 crates Iddneys, 15 crates" liares, 5 cases, gut, 6'cases shceps tongues, ,3U bales wool, 2i bales leather, 1 bale ' rabbitskins, 169 ■ sacks peas, 178 -casks tallow, 170 casks pelts, 20 casks and kegs casings, 19 casks oleo, and 33 packages sundries. .- Advices-from Sydney report that' there is to be a conference in. Melbourne .next month between the, Australian Institute of Marine Engineers and tlio Commonwealth- Steamship Owners' Association.. Many. important phases of the engineers' duty are to be discussed. The principal grievance of .the men is the alleged undermanning of tho engine rooms. The number _ of' hands employed is the same as in the past, but latter day inventions in the way of auxiliary power for freezing,: electric lighting, hydraulic lifting, etc., have necessitated'a considerable amount of extra labonr on the engineers' part. In the old days, practically tho only engine" outside the propelling one 1 was a donkey pump. Nowadays, it. is not -uncommon, it is said, for a modern steamer to have as many as from 20 to 30 separate engines pn-'board. All theso require special attention, and it is claimed that the staffs of such vessels round the Australian coast are continually at work repairing and adjusting machinery, for .which they rcceivoi no overtime.
