COttUKSI'OKDENT.) Dunedin, September 24. The . wind this , morning was not eo. strong as yesterday's gale, and some-very-good golf was seen in the second round of the amateur championship of New. Zealand. The surprises of this round were the defeat of Basil Smith and A. F. Roberts by G: Forbes, of St. Clair, and G. C. and C. C. Holmes respectively. , Perhaps the best 'match of the round was that bet-ween H. C., Smith and Rutherford. These players had previously- played a very close game in Christchurch when Rutherford came out on top at the twenty-third hole, but to : flay Smith had his revenge. . Smith won his first hole in an excellent four, and the next six holes were halved, both players equalling bogey in each instance. Smith won the Spionkop hole in 4 to Rutherford's 6. The ninth hole Rutherford won in 4, to Smith's o, Rutherford being successful with a long putt. This left Smith Tup at the turn. The tenth hole was (halved; and tho eleventh hole was won by Smith in a brilliant 5, Smith thus being 2 up.' At the next hole, (the twelfth) Rutherford reduced his deficit .to 1 down, taking 4 to Smith's 5j the latter having missed his drive and got into a deep cut just beyond the rushes, which caused him. to lose a stroke. Going to Anderston's both menplayed well against the wind, .and' the hole was halved in 6. Both . . drives to the swamp hole were exceptionally good, but Rutherford-, niissed. .his -second shot and narrowly escaped the ditch. ■ Smith holed in 5, and regained his lead-of 2 up. Going to the next hole, Smith did the better approach, but both missed 'their putts, and the hole was halved in 4. '■ Going to the Gorge, Rutherford played a beautiful ap-' proach, but going for a 3 he over-ran the hole by about 6 feet, and it was halved in 4, Smith just missed his putt," which, if it had come off, would have settled the match, as Smith w T as dormy 2. The seventeenth hole was halved in 5, and Smith thus, won by 2 up and 1 to play. The golf, all through was particularly good, neither ,man making any mistakes - worth mentioning. ' In tho game between Forbes and Basil Smith, the St. Clair man had the latter fighting all the way. Smith,'who was. suffering from a slightly strained wrist, started off badly.' He was right off'his': driving, and at the end of the fifth hole was-4 down. Then ho started fighting, and won the sixth hole in 4 (Bogey 5), and the seventh hole in 5, owing chiefly to laying his approach dead at Spion-kop (tho eighth hole).;'; Forbes laid his second shot dead; Smith being below the hole in his drive did not get' on the green in his second, and Forbes won it in 4. In the ninth hole botli .were well over' in"their second, _ Smith being below the hole, and Forbes just short. Both approached well, and Smith holed his putt for| 4," Forbest just missing. Forbes was thus .2 up at the turn. At the tenth hole both drove well, and Forbes, approaching-.the better of the two, .won in .4, making him. 3 up. At the eleventh hole Smith got over the rushes in his second, : while-Forbes got into them,, but, lying'clear, could use his brassie. Smith, playing the straighter of the two, won the hole in 6, being then 2-down. Koromiko hole was halved in 4, Smith, \vhose ball lay short, having to play the.- "two more." Forbes, 3 up and 6 to' go. - The Anderston hole was halved in 6, Smith having bad luck' in, getting-a- u putt,Jo...the.:. lip;.o£ the hole. Th'e next hold was halved- in oy Smith using his iron, with a lot. of "cut"- on to negotiate a partial stymie. . Starting the next hole (Bishopscourt) .Smith was 3 down and.; 4 to go, and' he had,' .to win .it'.io have a chance 1 of winning the match. ' This ho did. At the. Gorge, Smith approached the better, but Forbes holed out' in 3 with' a superb putt, aiid Smith also holing his. putt the hole was halved. ' Forbes was then dormy 2. Tho next hole (the seventeenth) settled it. Both men drove well, Smith using his iron. Forbes's approach v-as a lovely : shot, lying dead. ' Smith played through the rushes on to' the edge of the' green, lying ten yards from the hole. His only hope was to play to hole out on the chance of Forbes missing his putt. He failed to do so by about a foot, and Forbes holed out and won the match 2 up and 1 to play. ■ Forbest'went. on • and did the round in 84. His approaching, throughout w ; as superb. ; ■ A. F. Roberts, as in the first' round, had another close match, but this' time he was 1 down. Roberts led the'whole, way to tho thirteenth hole,, being 3 up, at the sixth,, which lead he kept to the ninth, w'here Holmes reduced the lead to.'2 up. The next ■four holes were halved, making Roberts 2 up at-the thirteenth" hole. Holmes won the ■next three holes, Roberts): who was again troubled by the wind, pulling ,two tee shots out of bounds, playing to tho sixteenth hole, .where Holmes was 1 up and 2 . to play. Roberts made it all squaro, at "the sixteenth hole by doing it,in four. The result hung on the last hole,' but 1 Roberts ,pulled "his drivo into the rushes. Holmes lay. nicely on the green ; and holed out 'in! 3 to Roberts's 4, thus winning a very close match. < Fisher had a comfortable 1 ; win from Turnbull-, whose splendid putting went some little way to atone for his poor -approaching, due ; to his developing a habit !of "socketing" jwith his iron. , '' '-' ' W. -M- Turnbull was up all the way on H. D. Stronach, who hardly played up to forrii, and Sams played a shade too'strongly for Park. Lusk very easily accounted for Treweok. " Trolove won by default from Macowan, whom business detained 1 in town.
