ATHLETIC PARK.

CORPORATION SEEKS AUTHORITY TO ACQUIRE. It was agreed at the meeting of the City Council last night that Councillor Fisher, M.P., should arrange for the. insertion in one of the local Bills before Parliament of provisions, the object of which is to enable the City Corporation, if it;so desires, to acquire the lease of. the Athletic Park for the purposes .of a sports ground. ,The clauses set forth that by'a deed of loaso bearing date July 26, 1895, and made botween the Public Trustee of the one, part and tho Athletic Park Company, Limited, of the other part, the park was'devised to the, company, and .its. successors for. the term of sixty-three years from October 3, 1893.' For the purpose-of .ensuring that the park should continue to. be used, as a'sports ground it was desirable that the city of Wellington 'should be empowered to acquire the estate of tho lessee, for the time being under the deed of lease, and also if it should acquire such estate, to acquire. the estate,of the Public Trustee in'the park., i It is therefore desired that it be enacted as follows:—(1), The corporation may purchase, acquire, or take under the provisions of.tho Public Works Act, 190,8, for tho purposes of a sports ground, the estate ..of the lessee, for the time being under the deed of lease, and when the corporation shall so acquire such estate, to purchase, acquire, or. fake the estate of the Public Trustee in the land; and the Public-Trustee is in such case .authorised and empowered to sell to the corporation. 2. If and when . the corporation shall acquire tho estate of the lessee the park shall, be used only for the purpose of a Sports ground; and,-subject to this restriction, the corporation may, notwithstanding anvthing to the contrary in any' statute contained, lease the park to any club, association, or body formed for the purposes of field sports, and may make or authorise "to 'be made any charges for the use of the same for field sports or for admission to the park.
