The'weather to-day. was. a severe'test for golf, and- slicing and putting means trouble every time, as a strong southerly blew all day, and. a few sleet showers also passed over the links, making the greens treacherous when the bright sunshine got on to them. Of the close -matches that between the Smith Bros.; of Dunedin, was full of interest. : Rpjb,ert. won,, |;he; first four holes, but Basil, approaching'better," took the fifth, 202 yards. At the, ninth hole, •420 yards.- Robert missed his drive, and .his second shot went out or bounds, so ho picked up his ball. He was thus 1 up at the turn. He increased it, to 2 up at the next hole, where both got. into trouble in the rushes, owing to the head wind. The' game between C. Turnbull; of Dunediri, and Sleigh', of. Christchurch, was also close. "': During the first half Turnbull obtained a lead of 3 up, but'at-the seventeenth hole it Was all square,'and one to play,-Turnbull winning'the last hole..with, a fine putt from the edge of'the green. W. 'M. Turtibull, of Diinedin, and Harman, of Christchurch, also decided only at the last,hole. Turnbull' at "one . time was 3 iip. At the last hblo, when _ the score was all. equare, Harmari/lost his ball in the' rushes, and finally Turnbull ihad to claim the hole. The .winner did a phenomenal hdlo at the Camel's Backj holing out in two, with the . wind behind, him,'-Bogey,for this liole being five. • B. C. , Thd 'annual; meeting of the New Zealand Golf Councir was, lield ,this evening,: and it ■ : was decided that the 1909 championship meeting should, if possible, be held on the Trentham links. It was also decided to make the amateur championship opon to any amateur golfer,' so that players from Australia and elsewhere might compete.
