' '• NOTES. tBT.TXI.EQIIAriI.—SPECIAL COKRESrONDENT.I ■ Dunedin, September 22.: The weather to-day was again favourable for golf at Balmaccwan, but the morning was much hotter than yesterday, so tho greens were very keen indeed and trying to nervous • putters. The afternoon was, however, cool and dull, and ideal golf weather.' Tho open championship was concluded tonight, and Clements, the _ nin6teen-year-'old professional from Wanganui, won this match with the good score of 335 for the four rounds of medal play, his cards being 83 — 81 —88—83. D. Hood', the younger brother of-the Auckland professional, finished only one stroke behind Clements, so tho North Island professionals have thus secured first and second prizes, namely, £25 and £10.' "Clements's entry for tho championship was riot in by tho correct date, and until the very last moment it was uncertain whether, he would bo allowed to compete. However, the other, professionals were all willing that Clements should be' permitted to play, and so' ho did, and well too, as the result, has proved. Herd; the Christchurch professional, took 338, namely, 82—80—88—82, and when asked about his game, he would only-say: "It's them blank greens, A canna' putt." However, he wasn't the only one who funked the short shotters to-day. 1
So far no matches havo. been played, as both yesterday, and to-day have been devoted to stroke play. To-morrow morning the real struggles for tho amateur championship will begin. H. E. Wright, Christclnirch,' plays H. B. Lusk, formerly of Auckland, and now a Shirley, player, and Lusk's notorious lack of nerves should carry Wright through. I. Sa.unders plays P. Trolove, a 5-handieap man from Christchurch, and I think the North Island man will live through the first round.
Other interesting matches will bo B. B. Wood, tho holder of the Shirley championship, versus B C. Rutherford, » young and promising scratch player of the same club. H. Smith, tho present Otigo champion, meets P. Wright, of Timaru, and that reminds, me I heard a rumour that'one of the Smith Bros, will win tho final. However, wo shall know on Saturday, and my opinion is that the championship is very open this year. Sams (Shirley), Roberts Balmacewan), W. Harman, A. Fisher, B: Rutherford, Treweek, and several others, are all getting into form, and improving, every round. - - In conclusion I will only say that the strain on golfers during the past two days has been a new experience in New Zealand, as never before have there been four consecutive rounds of medal play at a tournament, and I understand that those who qualified have heaved several sighs of relief since the names were announced. •
