: ? ——; ' INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR 'EGJIONT. . (BI TELEGEArH— ISSOCIATIOIf.) Eltham, September 22. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, Independent Opposition candidate for Egmont, opened his campaign last night. Ho dealt exhaustively with tinanco, especially interest charges and taxation, and alleged that large sums had been improperly debited to-ljorrowed money. Ho said he favoured tho universal military training of youths under 21 years, the encouragement of volunteering, and the establishment of a navy in conjunction: with Australia. Ho announced that ho was a prohibitionist, and that ho favoured a bare majority, but not Dominion option. He opposed free trade, the present system of valuation and charitable aid, and was a strong freeholder. He criticised warmly the Opposition caucus which selected • Mr. B. Dive for the seat chiefly on the ground that it was not representative and the chairman had no political standing. THE PAHIATUA SEAT. Woodville, September 22. Mr. J. C. Cooper, Opposition candidate for Pahiatua, addressed a large meeting here last night. He was well,"received, and got a vote of thanks. THE SURURBS*SEAT. Mr. J. E. Fitzgerald, a candidate for the Suburbs seat at the., forthcoming elections, addressed a crowded meeting at the Ngahauranga Public Hall last evening, Mr. A. \Vixon occupying the chair. An address on similar lines to previous ones was given; and a number of were satisfactorily answered. ' On the motion of Mr. J. Shortis, seconded by Mr. W. Pope, tho candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and .confideuco, and a large committeo was sot up to advance his interests. Mr. Fitzgerald speaks at Maranui on Thursday night, and at- tho Kiosk, Worser Bay, on Friday night.

To-night tho public aro invited to attend a No-Liconso meoting in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown. An address will ho given by the Rev. W. J. Comrio, and there will also be a musical programme. '
