CITY ABATTOIRS.
THE NCAHAURANGA CORCE SITE.,
The plans for the city abattoirs, to bo erected on the City Councils property,'at Garrett's site, Ngahauranga, have been 'prepared, and are on view at |the.<, City.; Engineer's department.. The buildings,*- which will be 72ft. by 67ft. in .measurement,%ro to be of brick, aud will be situated a mile and a half from tl'ie Ngahauranga railway, st-ation on the left side of the main road, to 'Johnsonville. Tlio Ngahauranga Stream flows; through the site, and it will be necessary to enclose it in a concrete culvert 300 ft. in length. The main building provides hanging -space for 300. sheep,. 40 head of cattle, and 40 1 pigs 'simultaneously. There will be five covered yards.for cattle, a similar number for sheep, and six small ones for pigs. The whole, of the yards are to have concrete floors, for improved sanitation —in . fact, everything' required for efficient working and sanitary purposes is provided for.-:. Side-rooms • will be added for the removal of offal,. and the preparation of hides and. skins, and dotapned buildings will consist of offices and stores, and the men's rooms will be near the main approach. Drafting yards are. to be provided for, the proper handling of sheep; and a considerable area of the site will be available for additional yarding, and for future extensions, the plans allowing for this without any great difficulty. In front of the building, there will be.a large staging for convenience in loading. The roofs are to be of steel, and the whole ceiling -will be lined with corrugated iron. Tenders close on October 22, and it is expected: that the building will be ready for use about seven months after the contract islet.
The area of the property is twenty-one acres altogether, and it origiually belonged to Messrs. Exley and Garrett. On the other side of the stream, the hills rise, almost perpendicularly to a-height of between 7 200 and 300 feet. Considering tbo fact that tho country in the immediate neighbourhood is practically hill, the difficulty of paddocking may be found a serious one. It may be pointed out, however, that the slaughtor-house. will not be far from either Ngahauganga or Joliusouvillc, on the Government and Manawatu railway lines respectively, and the extent of paddocking necessary should .hardly be as much as would be required by a slaughter house differently situated. ; > , There should bo no troublo' in securing supplies of water, for the locality is said, tc abound in springs, and, if necessary, a reser voir could be constructed on an elevatec spring-fed site.
