At the anuual meeting of tho Alfrcdton Rifle Club, Mr. C. Kebboll was olected president, and Messrs. H. Dagg, and Saunders vico-prcsidents; Mr. O. licnton was elected captain; Mr. li. Kebboll, secretary; Messrs. H. lvcbboll and R. AAilton, programme committee, and Messrs. H. D a SS and C. Benton, handicappers. llie club will commence the season with a credit of £9. Masterton yesterday experienced a very cold snap in the shape of a biting southerly. In ..tho evening, however, the weather becamo calmer and warmer. The snow on the Tararuas has almost all melted away. , ' In reply to an invitation from the I rime Minister to close tho business places here on Dominion Day, tho Mayor, Mr. P. L. Boilings, states that he does not intend to proclaim a holiday. . . Mr. Frank Buick, of Opaki, is at present seriously ill. . A sitting of tho Magistrate's Court was held here yesterday, when C. A. Pownall and T. Dwyer were charged with being on licensed promises on Sunday without lawful excuse. The defence was that both were the guests of tho licensee, and as no evidence was given to show contrary, tho magistrate dismissed both informations. Hugh Spiers and Arthur Doylo were sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour for tho theft of a gold watch and chain, and money to the value of £20 from Patrick Carr, who was travelling by rail to Masterton from Palmerston North at tho time of tho theft. Alex. Allen was fined £2 for being drunk and disorderly, and three young men were fined £2 each for annoying Chinese residents. A Chinaman named Kong Chong was fined Is. and £1 costs for working a horse with a bad gall.
