SCULLING.
ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP: TOWNS UNWELL. (by telegraph—raEss association—copyright./ London, September. 16. The Australian Georgo Towns, ex-sculling champion of the world, who is to row Ernest Barry for the professional championship of England, is in bed. He is suffering from influenza. The attack is, however, slight, and he is quickly recovoring. As tho proposed date of the race is October 12, Towns has plenty of time to recover. The match is for the English professional sculling championship and stakes of JMOO, and is to be rowed over the Thames championship course. "The Times" 'points out that Towns "has twice won tho English .championship and three times the world's championship, while Barry has yet to scull his first, match," although ho has done well in handicaps. The same paper states that " Barry, who looked _ unlikely at one time to secure sufficient backing, is being supported by a few sportsmen from the Central Markets, whilo Mr. Spencer Gollan, the New Zealand racehorse owner, finds the money for Towns."
