AUSTRALIAN FOSSILS.
A NEW FIND. (hi temgbam—rßEsa association—copra ight.) Melbourne, September 17. An interesting discovery of splendid specimens of fossil trilobites has been made at Portland, 225 miles south-west of Melbourne. The find has proved the existence of Silurian rocks in Devonian strata. The trilobites referred to are small crustaceans varying in size from tho dimensions of a sixpence to three, four and five inches in length. The head shield portion is gonerally the part that has been preserved, tho swimming apparatus, which consists of a number of small feet, being very seldom found. .The discovery of trilobites in rocks of Devonian strata is of considerable importance (states Mr. A. Hamilton, director of tho Dominion Museum), as hitherto the genus, which is a very important one in iEuropean formations, has been absent from Australian collections. None has been found in the New Zealand Tock up to the present. The genus is a very large one, and contains , a great number of species of the Silurian period in England. The Silurian is one of the earliest formations in which life appeared in Britain.
