Both quest-ions were finally left to a later meeting to decide. . NOTES AND COMMENTS. Ashburton races take place' on Wednesday and- Thursday. At a meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club Committee, held last week, :Mr. W. Hartgill was appointed judge, and Mr. J. E. Henrys handicappor for tho ensuing season. The appointment of starter was held over. The steeplechasers Starlight and Pilot arrived from 1.-yttelton on Saturday morning en route to Hulls to fulfil their •pngagemehts in the Rangitikei. Steeplechase. ;; Percy .Johnson has accepted -the'position of trainer for Mr. Matthews, '-of- Waitara, and will in future have charge of-Dr.' Shimose and a couple of other horses.- - Johnson went through from Hastings to - Waitara on Friday, taking with him the I hurdler ■ Bushranger. From the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club we have received a book of the'programmes for the season 1008-1909. Tho Sylvia Park gelding' Flimsnap, who has not been seen out- since the Wanganui spring meeting of last year, will probably make his reappearance at the 'corresponding fixture this season. The Jockey Club Stakes, of'] 0,000 sovs., one mile and three-quarters,. .is to" be run at the' Newmarket meeting on October 1. Your Majesty, who won the Eclipse Stakes and the St. Leger,. is not' engaged in - the Jockey Club Stakes. : Arolia, who won a steeplechase on each day of the Gisborne meeting,' left Hastings for Bulls on Saturday ; to take part in the Rangitikei Steeplechase. The field for the Spring Handicap at Rangitikei includes six New Zealand Cup candidates, viz., Maliuta, Moloch,Manaranui, Landwern, Glenullin, and Saga.' Though Aborigine did not accept for- the Flying Handicap at the Rangitikei meeting, he is said to be sure to make the trip to the Wanganui meeting next week. •*• The English-bred Ringdove appears among tho acceptors for the Ashburton Racing Club Handicap, to be run on Wednesday. Mr. J. B. Joel, owner of (tho St, Leger winner Your, Majesty, has had a wonderful run of luck this year, and his -total winnings m stakes must now amount-to over £23,000. lho winnings of Your Majesty,- alone, amount to £18,000. Tho colt has. -won the St James's Palaco Stakes, Ascot-,' the' Eclipse Stakes,. Sandown. Park, tho': St,' George Stakes, Liverpool, and the St.- Leger. ' Tho spring meeting of the Rangitikei Rac»iE Club, which-is to be -held' at 'Bulls on Wednesday and Thursday .next, promises to be a most successful one'. Excellent acceptances have been received :for,,-the-first day's events, and the' class of horses engaged in the Rangitikei Steeplechase-.'and tlie Spring Handicap is much -above -tW average.' The Steeplechase field includes Nadador . (winner of-tho- Wellington Steeplechase),' Tilson (Wanganui St-eeplechasoV Pilot ■ (a double winner at Riccarton), Bulworth (Gisborne Steeplechase), Mahoe, Aroha, " Janella,, and Starlight, all good performers. Tho annual' report of tho stewards of the \\ellingt-on llncing Club, to lie present-ed at the annual general meeting of 'members on September 30, shows that the past year's results aro in every ' way satisfactpry. The, stakes- for the year were' iincreased' by £2230, and the profit on tho year's working amounted to £6280. The patronage accorded by owners during the year was most satisfactory, and, notwithstanding exceptionally' bad weather on the opening day of tho winter meeting, the gate receipts show an. increase. The stewards regret to have to record the 'deaths during tho past year of Hon. W. W. Johnston, Mr. 0; M'Afdle, and -Mr. H. K. Bethune. ' On three previous occasions this season the Australian jockey, Wobtton, has ridden three winners during an. afternoon. , At the end of July he was third on tho list of winning jockeys, Higgs having ridden ten more and Maher three more winners than Wootton.
