ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.
NIMROD TO SAIL ON DECEMBER 1. (Br TELEGRAm—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, September 11. It is understood that tho British Antarctic .expedition ship Nimrod will leave Lyttclton on December 1 on her second trip to t-ho Antarctic regions. The vessel has liow been in Lyttolton nearly seven months sinco her return from tho South, and during that time her officers and the men who have stayed by her havo not been idlo. A largo amount of work has been dono recently in conncction with tho overhauling and repairing of tho vessel to fit her to . cope successfully with tho elements during her coining voyage. Tho whole of tho rigging has been thoroughly overhauled and repaired. A reporter who visited tho Nimrod yesterday found that an important work was in progress. This consists in tho. extension of tho living quarters below in tho aftor-ond of tho vessel. - Tho additional space is being obtained by expanding tho living quarters into the aftorliold, portion-of which is now being partitioned off by stout timber walls newly lined inside. When completed tho enlarged quarters will bo moro comfortable than those in tho after deckhouse, which wore occupied by tlio shore party on tho trip to -the ice. Tho Nimrod will ship a full year's supply of stores boforo starting for tho South, and the wholo of tho remaining available space will be filled with coal. Lieutenant F. P. Evans, 11. N.R., of tho Union Company, is to take tho command of tho vessel for tho next voyago South. • •
