Sir Thomas Bent, the State Premier, intends to ask Cabinet to invite a squadron of British battleships to visit Australia. THE COMING ELECTIONS. — 6 —' THE AVON SEAT. Mr. John Jamieson, who is a member of the education board and the East Cliristohurch School Committee, and who has taken a keen interest in matters affecting the Avon electorate, will be a candidate for Avon at tho coming election. . Mr. J. E, Fitzgerald, a candidate for the Suburbs seat, addressed a crowded meeting at the Parish Hall, Johnsonville, last night. The chair was occupied by Mr. Eason, senr. In a two hours' speech, Mr. Fitzgerald dealt with tho industrial progress of the Dominion during the term of the present Government, paying spccial attention to frozen meat, butter, cheese, savings bank deposits, etc. Whilo speaking on Socialism, an interlude occurred in which-Mr. Robert Hogg took exception to the speaker's remark that, Socialism was not practicable, and that as put forward by its New Zealand advocates it was as impossible as it was destructive. On tho motion of Mr.Murdoch, seconded by Mr. G. Campbell, a vote of thanks and confidence was carried by acclamation. A strong committee was set up to further tho candidate's interests.
